Alexander was transported as a convict on the "Egyptian". Arriving at Hobart on 16 August 1839 as a 15-year-old he began the first generation in Tasmania of many "McDonald" descendants.

Alexander was convicted at Inverness on 24 September 1838: "Transported for house breaking." 

In Van Diemen's Land Alexander was shown working for William Griffiths and Ronald C. Gunn.

He made an application for a permit to marry Catherine O'Neill in 1852. No marriage record has been located.

No birth record has been found for their five children, but their baptism records are held by the Catholic Church archives.
