Rowland Thomas DOSSETT was tried at Birmingham on 23 March 1848. He was 5 feet 6- and three-quarter inches tall and aged 22. His religion was Presbyterian. He was single and could read and write. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing carpenter's tools (saws). He had a previous conviction a similar offence where he had been sentenced to 6 months in prison. Rowland was a carpenter and joiner.
Rowland was transported as a convict on the ship "William Jardine", leaving Portland on 12 August 1850. 26 November 1850 Assigned to William Cleland at New Norfolk 21 December 1850 At New Norfolk Rowland was found to be out after hours and representing himself to be free. For this he was given 7 days in solitary confinement. 27 December 1850 Rowland was returned to service with William Cleland at New Norfolk. [CHRISTMAS 1850 SPENT IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT] |
On 2 September 1851
Again, at New Norfolk he was found to have taken a horse out of his master's stable without permission and also not in accordance with his pass. For this he was given 14 days in solitary confinement.

Rowland and Johanna had their first child, Mary Ann Martha DOSSETT born at Collins Street, Hobart.
25 August 1853
At just 5 months of age, Mary Ann Martha died at Hobart from influenza.
16 February 1854
Another daughter was born at Franklin, Tasmania. Not named at birth but later named Agnes.
24 June 1854
Rowland sailed in steerage from Launceston on the ship "Clarence" destined for Melbourne. As a free settler, his wife Johanna and daughter Agnes were not described as travelling with him, but this is assumed.

A second living daughter, Johanna was born around Geelong in 1858 and was Christened on 27 July 1858 at St Mary of the Angels Catholic Church at Geelong, Victoria.
Possibly attracted by the gold rush, Rowland next appears in Victoria in the goldfields.
Their next child Martha Ann is shown as being born on 21 August 1855 at Geelong, Victoria.
