MARRIED LIFE
Catherine at 25 year of age married John Bracken at St Mark's Church, Brighton, Tasmania on 7 February 1853. John was a 32 year old widower who was a convict, arriving on the Hyderabad.

John was born in Ireland in 1821, he was one of six children of Richard and Bridget Bracken of County Roscommon. His siblings were Patrick, Michael, James, Bridget and Mary. This information comes from his Statement of Offence.
On the 23rd Feb 1847 John was tried and convicted in Roscommon of breaking into a dwelling and assaulting Michael Cox. He was sentenced to transportation to Van Diemen's Land for seven years.
John's prison report stated that he was single, that he hadn't been convicted before and that his conduct was good, he was 5' 3/4" tall with fair complexion, brown hair and grey eyes, and gave his trade as a blacksmith.
He was incarcerated in the penitentiary of Spike Island, Cork, until eventually leaving from the port of Dublin on 23rd of May 1849 for Van Diemen's Land, arriving in Hobart Town on 26th of August 1849 having sailed upon the ship Hyderabad.
John Bracken met Catherine Cunningham while both were assigned to working in Pontville in 1852. Pontville is about 27 km north of Hobart.
John Bracken was married to Catherine Cunningham at Saint Mark's Church, Pontville by the Rector, the Reverend John Burrows on the 7th February 1853. John stated that he was 32yo and a widow, whilst Catherine stated she was a 25yo spinster.
John Bracken's certificate of freedom was granted on 3rd March 1854 and by September 1855 John and Catherine had departed Van Diemens Land and were headed for Victoria.
John and Catherine's first child, Albert Thomas Bracken was born in Port Albert, Victoria on 28th September 1855.
John and Catherine would go on to have another six children after Albert, seven children in all. Winifred 'Selina' Bracken born 11th May 1857 in Alberton, Alberton District. John James Bracken born 24th March 1859 in Mount Doran, Clarendon District. Richard Henry Bracken born 5th January 1861, also at Mount Doran. Katherine Josephine Bracken born 12th November 1862 at Greenhills, Clarendon District. Maria Bracken born 16th September 1864 at Stoney Rises, Morrabool District. Michael Patrick Bracken born 24th July 1870 at Lal Lal, Clarendon District.
As a blacksmith, a trade that was very much in demand at the time, John probably moved from town to town in order to get work such as shoeing horses etc on local farms, this is evidenced by the fact that his children were born in various locations around country Victoria.
By 1870, John had changed his occupation to a wood splitter, and was felling large trees in Lal Lal, probably for use in the coal mining tunnels in Lal Lal, or for housing, or fencing on farms.
Unfortunately, John died unforeseen and prematurely on the 27th August 1870, probably as a result of his heavy drinking. He was only 49 years of age.
The following is taken from the newspaper, The Ballarat Star on Tuesday 30th August 1870.
"A splitter named John Bracken living near Lal Lal, died rather suddenly on Sunday. He was out in the bush at his work on Saturday, and on his return he was rather drunk. He told his wife that he had drunk several pints of beer. After he was in bed he complained of a pain in the pit of his stomach, and shortly after he began to vomit. On Sunday he grew weak and expired about half past four o'clock in the afternoon. It appears that he was a heavy drinker. The district coroner held an inquest on the body on Monday, when the verdict of the jury was to the effect that Bracken's death was through exhaustion and shock to his nervous system, caused by ulceration and perforation of the coats of his stomach".
