IMG2GO ai Generated image of the Greenlaw from text: 420-ton barque wooden ship from convict times.
My interest in this convict ship was the transport of my 3g grandmother, Mary HANLY.
The Greenlaw was a 430-ton barque. It sailed from Dublin on Thursday 7 March 1844, arriving at Hobart Town on Tuesday 2 July 1844 (118 days).
This voyage travelling via the Cape of Good Hope was a distance of 12206 nautical miles. A ship travelling non-stop at 10 knots would take 50 days and 21 hours, so this voyage included many stops along the way. [www.sea-distances.org]. Should the Greenlaw have made equal distance per day, the daily travel would have been about 103 nautical miles per day. Days of good wind and days of bad weather would see this vary.
The ship was later wrecked at Coringa, India with the loss of all but three of those on board. She was on a voyage from London to Calcutta, India. ["Ship News". The Morning Post (23339). London. 26 September 1848.]
The surgeon's report begins on 9 February 1844. Medical terms are shown at the bottom of the page.
Crew:
Female Convicts: 120 (5 deaths)
Convict's children: 28 (19 not identified - didn't present as sick, 3 deaths)
