Queenborough Cemetery [NS526-1-24 (cropped)]
Keeping a detailed account for any cemetery or graveyard that no longer exists can be problematic. This is the case for the Queenborough Graveyard, closed to build new sports grounds and a private school. There are some available sources of information to build a picture of the location. Photographs have been taken and yet to be processed.
The primary source of information is Tasmanian Archives Series AB413/1 – A handwritten transcription of headstones undertaken around 1953 consisting of an index followed by the headstone transcriptions. Details have been supplemented by available records in the Tasmanian Archives Name Index, as well as other secondary sources such as Ancestry, Wikitree, TROVE and others.
Also collating the list of 1960's exhumations from MCC16-2-1-549. 893 names so far.
Interesting to note that some deaths described occurred BEFORE the cemetery was commenced and seen a commemorative.
The process consists of:
1. Transposing the index to a spreadsheet.
2. Expanding each person onto a genealogy database (Roots Magic).
3. Reporting the resulting outcome including correcting errors as variations on the original record in a Word document.
4. Adding the headstone transcriptions in a further Word document with original transcription and expanded family links.
5. Some of the more interesting life stories will be further reported from available sources.
This is a large research project and the information for now is being updated occasionally. If you have an enquiry, please get in touch:

THIS WORK IN PROGRESS IS INCOMPLETE BUT WORK ONGOING.
Currently: 69/87 (79%) index pages of records processed, 3270 names.
Male: 1670 Female: 1571 Unknown Gender: 29
On completion, then identify duplicate names (the same person described on multiple headstones)
This is resolving steps 1-3.
From the Historical Society of Sandy Bay:
“The Queenborough Regional Cemetery was opened in 1873 by two Sandy Bay businessmen, George Luckman and Stephen Large. Over 3,000 burials took place at the cemetery. Many of the early Settlers and Merchants of Sandy Bay and well-known Hobart Town identities were buried there. One of the earliest Naval burials took place there in 1877. The cemetery originally occupied the site from the edge of Sandy Bay Road, extending up Nelson Road on the left, to where Churchill Avenue and the Hutchins School are today.
By 1913 the Queenborough Cemetery Company had run out of money to maintain the cemetery and the entire site lay derelict until the Hobart City Council purchased the site in 1915 and later built sports grounds on the lower portion - Queenborough Oval. The remainder of the cemetery was used until it was closed in 1934 and was later dismantled in 1961 for the construction of The Hutchins School and associated sports grounds.
In Peel Street, the headstones of many of the dead have been preserved in a memorial garden. Other headstones from the original Queenborough Cemetery have been removed to a dedicated area at Cornelian Bay Cemetery in New Town.”
